[edit]ESSJa states it is a derivative of *mati (“mother”). Compare also Vasmer's statement. Derksen, on the other hand, prefers to connect it to Latin mātūrus (“mature”), perhaps, ultimately, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂- (“to ripen, to mature”).
