[edit]Cognate with Tatar матур (matur, “beautiful”) and Chuvash маттур (mattur, “strong, stout; dextrous; brave; beautiful”). Presumably, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *bagatur (“hero”).[1]
Irregular nasalization and preservation of a roundness-disharmonic high vowel could be indicative of some sort of reloaning scenario.
