матур

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Bashkir

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Cognate with Tatar матур (matur, beautiful) and Chuvash маттур (mattur, strong, stout; dextrous; brave; beautiful). Presumably, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *bagatur (hero).[1]

Irregular nasalization and preservation of a roundness-disharmonic high vowel could be indicative of some sort of reloaning scenario.

Doublet of батыр (batır, hero, brave).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [mɑˈtʊɾ]
  • Hyphenation: ма‧тур
