[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *múktei (“to slip away, to flee, escape”), from Proto-Indo-European *mu-n-ék-ti ~ *mu-n-k-éti, from *(s)mewk-. Compare Latvian mukt (“knock off, slip”), Lithuanian mùkti, munkù, mukaũ (“be released, escape”).
