[edit]- Either from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gulbis, according to Pokorny, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃- (“to flourish, shine, be joyful”)[1] (whence Latvian gùlbis, Lithuanian gulbìs, Old Prussian gulbis) with a variant *kulpis (whence Proto-Slavic *kъlpь);
- or from the same source as Greek κυβιός (kubiós) and Latin gobius. Connected also with *kъlbь.
