[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *skáiˀdīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *skoyd-éye-ti (“to make separated”), causative from the root *skeyd- (“to split, divide”). Formally cognate with Latvian skaîdît (“to dilute, spill”) and Lithuanian skáidyti (“to separate, divide, distribute”). From a different formation, Lithuanian skíesti (“to separate, dilute”) and šķiêst (“to scatter, spill, cut”).
Indo-European cognates include Proto-Germanic *skītaną (“to defecate, to shit”), Latin scindō, Ancient Greek σχίζω (skhízō, “I split, cleave”), Welsh cwys, Sanskrit छिनत्ति (chinátti).
