Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *skáiˀdīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *skoyd-éye-ti (to make separated), causative from the root *skeyd- (to split, divide). Formally cognate with Latvian skaîdît (to dilute, spill) and Lithuanian skáidyti (to separate, divide, distribute). From a different formation, Lithuanian skíesti (to separate, dilute) and šķiêst (to scatter, spill, cut).

Indo-European cognates include Proto-Germanic *skītaną (to defecate, to shit), Latin scindō, Ancient Greek σχίζω (skhízō, I split, cleave), Welsh cwys, Sanskrit छिनत्ति (chinátti).
