Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Per Trubačev (ESSJa), likely a 0-grade variant of *brězgati. Melnychuk (in context to the Ukranian descendants) considers denominal origin from Proto-Slavic *brězgъ, *brьzgъ.
Compare also dial. Bulgarian бръ́згам (brǎ́zgam, “to spew, to leak (for mucus, pus)”) (primarily “to strew, to sprinkle” apparently from *brъzgati).
