Etymology

Probably onomatopoeic, related to *bryzgati. Analogous grade variation is also observed in Southern *prъskati : Northern *pryskati (both “to splash, to spray”). Formally equivalent to Lithuanian brũzgât (“to snort”), perhaps of shared origin (compare further Proto-Indo-European *bʰrew- (“to brew”)).

BER joins the meanings to strew (ръся) with to burst, to spew (пръскам), however, the later sense may also reflect *brьzgati.
