[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *bébrukas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰébʰru-kos, from *bʰébʰrus (“beaver”), from *bʰerH- (“brown”). By surface analysis, *bèbrъ + *-ъkъ (or equivalently *bebrъ (u-stem) + *-kъ).
Cognate with Sanskrit बभ्रुकः (babhrukaḥ, “ichneumon”), Thracian *bebruk- (“beaver”), from which Ancient Greek Βέβρυκες (Bébrukes).[2]
