From Proto-Balto-Slavic *-ēnas +‎ *-inъ. Compare Lithuanian -ėnas, possibly Latvian -ēns

    *Slovǫta (Dnieper) + ‎*-ěninъ → ‎*slověninъ (Slav)
    *gorà (mountain) + ‎*-ěninъ → ‎*gorěninъ (mountain dweller)
  2. Forms names of the inhabitants of the place names
    *gȏrdъ (fortification; town, city) + ‎*-ěninъ → ‎*gorděninъ (townsman)
    *selò (village, settlement) + ‎*-ěninъ → ‎*selěninъ (villager)
