Etymology

Compound of *-janъ +‎ *-inъ (agentive suffix), a palatalized variant of *-ěninъ, from *-ěnъ and *-aninъ.

   *selo (“village”) → *seľaninъ (“villager”)

   *gordъ (“town, bourgh”) → *gorďaninъ (“burgher”)

   *gora (“mountain”) → *gořaninъ (“mountain-dweller”)

   *lęda (“open land, field”) → *lęďaninъ (“field-dweller”)

   *bergъ (“coast”) → *beržan(in)ъ (“coastal dweller”)
