Etymology

Substantivized form of the adjective *žeravъ (scorching, burning) +‎ *-a. Some descendants have epenthetic -j-, probably by analogy with Proto-Slavic *žařavъ, *žařavica (scorching heat, hearth), from Proto-Slavic *žařati (to burn down).
