Proto-Slavic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Probably back-formed from *oťutiti (to perceive) < *ot- +‎ *jutiti via rebracketing of the prefix (*o- reanalyzed as the suffix *o(b)- and dropped; coda *-t- perceived as a part of the root).

Per Mladenov, there may have been (some) influence from Ottoman Turkish كوذماك (güdmek, to graze).

Verb

[edit]

*ťutati impf (South Slavic)

  1. to be attentive, quiet
