Etymology

Internal reconstruction points to earlier *čïlapun, potentially from an unknown verb *čïla-.

Traditionally connected to Turkic (cf. Chuvash чул (čul)) and Korean (cf. 돌 (dol)). However, according to Doerfer (1965), similarities to Proto-Turkic *tāĺ point to an early borrowing rather than inheritance. His argument is seconded by Vovin (2005), in his debunking of the "Altaic hypothesis".
