[edit]Suggested to be from *gā́wš ~ *gáws (“cow”) + unknown suffix *-štaH,[1] but perhaps instead inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gawštaH, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷews-teh₂, from *gʷṓws ~ *gʷéws (“cow”) + *-teh₂.
