Etymology

Suggested to be from *gā́wš ~ *gáws (cow) + unknown suffix *-štaH,[1] but perhaps instead inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gawštaH, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷews-teh₂, from *gʷṓws ~ *gʷéws (cow) +‎ *-teh₂.
