[edit]Inherited from Middle Persian 𐭢𐭥𐭱 (gʿš /gōš/), from Old Persian 𐎥𐎢𐏁 (g-u-š /gauša/, “ear”), from Proto-Iranian *gáwšah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰáwšas, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰows- (“hear”).
Indo-Iranian cognates include: Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬊𐬱𐬀 (gaoša), Baluchi گوش (goš), Northern Kurdish guh, Ossetian хъус (qus) / гъос (ǧos), Sanskrit घोष (ghoṣa). Also compare Old Armenian գոյշ (goyš), an Iranian borrowing.
