[edit]Unknown; possibly from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćáyHwaH (“precious; treasure”) (whence Sanskrit शेव (śéva, “dear, precious”)), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱéyH-weh₂, from *ḱeyH-.
