Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćáyHwas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱéyH-wo-s, from *ḱey-.[1] Cognate with Proto-Germanic *hīwō (“fortune”), Latin civis (“citizen”).[2]
