[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *som-bʰondʰ-ó-s, from *som- (“together”) + *bʰendʰ- (“to bind”) + *-ós. Equivalent to *sam- (“together”) + *bʰandʰás (“binding, joining”). Cognate with Old Norse samband n (“connection”).
