[edit]Probably from Pre-Germanic *streydʰh₁-, a compound of a Proto-Indo-European *strey- (“to resist”) + *dʰeh₁- (“to put”). Probably related to Latvian strīdēties, striêtiês (“to resist, quarrel”), Lithuanian strainùs (“unruly”).[1]
