Etymology

Probably from Pre-Germanic *streydʰh₁-, a compound of a Proto-Indo-European *strey- (to resist) + *dʰeh₁- (to put). Probably related to Latvian strīdēties, striêtiês (to resist, quarrel), Lithuanian strainùs (unruly).[1]
