[edit]From Pre-Germanic *sprewd-, but also possibly back-formed from the iterative, from Proto-Indo-European *sper- (“to strew”), extended form *sprewd-.[1] Related to Lithuanian sprausti (“to thrust”), Ancient Greek σπείρω (speírō, “I sow”).[2]
