[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel-, probably from Proto-Indo-European *kelh₁- (“to call, to shout, to sound”) with a s-mobile. Cognate with Latvian skaļš (“loud; noisy”) and Russian скули́ть (skulítʹ, “to whine”).[1]
