From Proto-Indo-European *sḱeyr- (luster, gloss, shadow), which may be related to *(s)ḱeh₃- (darkness, shadow), though the formal details are unclear if so.[1] Cognates include Albanian hir (grace, favor, mercy), Proto-Slavic *ščirъ (sincere, frank),[2] Ancient Greek σκίρον (skíron, parasol),[1] and perhaps Irish cír (pure).
