[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *sḱeyr- (“luster, gloss, shadow”), which may be related to *(s)ḱeh₃- (“darkness, shadow”), though the formal details are unclear if so.[1] Cognates include Albanian hir (“grace, favor, mercy”), Proto-Slavic *ščirъ (“sincere, frank”),[2] Ancient Greek σκίρον (skíron, “parasol”),[1] and perhaps Irish cír (“pure”).
