[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *krewH-dʰh₁-e-ti, from Proto-Indo-European *krewH- (“to heap up”) and cognate with Lithuanian kráuju, kráuti (“to put on top of each other”) and Proto-Slavic *krỳti (“to cover”).[1][2]
