Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *gʰladʰ-, from *gʰleh₂dʰ- (to shine).[1] Cognate to Lithuanian žlėjà (dusk), Latin glaber (smooth, hairless), and Old Church Slavonic гладъкъ (gladŭkŭ, smooth, even, sweet).[2]
