[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *gʰladʰ-, from *gʰleh₂dʰ- (“to shine”).[1] Cognate to Lithuanian žlėjà (“dusk”), Latin glaber (“smooth, hairless”), and Old Church Slavonic гладъкъ (gladŭkŭ, “smooth, even, sweet”).[2]
