From Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰerH-no-s, from *ǵʰerH- (to yearn for, rejoice). Cognate with Ancient Greek χαίρω (khaírō, to be very glad), Latin horior (to encourage), Sanskrit हर्यति (háryati, to enjoy, like).[1]
