Proto-Germanic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Likely derived from a lost substantive *fanþ-, from Proto-Indo-European *pónth₁s, *pónteh₁s. For the noun, compare Ancient Greek πόντος (póntos, “sea”), Sanskrit पन्था (panthā), पथ (patha, “road, way”), Latin pōns (“bridge”). For the derived verb, compare Ancient Greek πατέω (patéō, “to tread, walk”), Sanskrit पन्थति (panthati) or पन्थयति (panthayati, “to go, move”).
