[edit]From Pre-Germanic *dʰubʰ-néh₂- from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewbʰ- (“deep”), thus "go deep" > "dive". By synchronic analysis, an iterative verb related to the strong verb *dūbaną (“to dive”). Compare also West Germanic *duppijan.[1]
