From Proto-Indo-European *h₁éh₁t-mō ~ *h₁h₁t-m̥nés (breath, spirit), from *h₁eh₁t- +‎ *-mō. Cognate with Proto-Indo-Iranian *HáHtmā. Compare *ēþrǭ.
