[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *tu(h₂)m-ō, from *tum- (“to swell”), thus "big swollen finger" > "thumb". Cognate with Sanskrit तुम्र (túmra, “strong, big”), Latin tumor (“swelling, tumor”), Lithuanian tumė́ti (“to coagulate”), Welsh twf (“strength”).[1]
