Proto-Finnic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Most sources consider it a borrowing from Proto-Norse *ᛊᛁᚴᚨᛉ (*sĩkaʀ) (whence Norwegian Bokmål sik, Old Norse síkr, Swedish sik; the word is sometimes reconstructed as Proto-Germanic *sīkaz, but there are no known cognates outside North Germanic), and then posit that the Baltic and Slavic words are borrowed from Finnic.[1] A reverse direction of borrowing (Finnic to Germanic) is also possible,[2] but less likely.
