Etymology

Inherited from Middle Russian сигъ (sig) attested in 1496, borrowed from Old Novgorodian сиге (sige). Ultimately from Proto-Finnic *siika, of unknown further origin. Compare also Swedish sik, Norwegian Nynorsk sik and Latvian sīga.
