Etymology

From earlier *nita- +‎ *-odak, from Proto-Finno-Permic *ńida-, possibly borrowed from an Indo-European language (compare Sanskrit नह्यति (nahyati, to tie, bind)). Cognates include Proto-Samic *ńëδētēk, Erzya недямс (ńeďams).
