[edit]From *uɸo- (“under”) + *reidos (“ride, chariot”), the latter from *reideti (“to ride, move”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃reyH- (“to ride, move”). Related to Proto-Germanic *rīdaną (“to ride”) (whence English ride).
