Etymology

Since McCone, usually derived from Proto-Indo-European *h₂(é)rh₃-tis, from *h₂erh₃- (to plough),[1][2] with "fort, rampart" semantically arising from "dugout".[3]

An alternative comparison to Latin prātum (field, prairie) is usually met with disdain.[4][5][6]
