[edit]Traditionally compared to Sanskrit शोण (śoṇa, “crimson red”), setting up a common etymon *ḱów-no- (“luminous”).[1] Schrijver alternatively derives this from Proto-Indo-European *kup-nó-s, from the same root as Latin cupiō (“to desire”).[2]
