[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *(s)kert-, a t-extension of *(s)ker- (“to cut”). Cognates include Sanskrit कर्तति (kartati, “to cut, to divide”) (thematic present), कृन्तति (kṛntati, “to shred”) (ne-infix present).
