Etymology

From *anja (to breathe),[1] from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₁- (to breathe), + *-tā (nominal suffix). Compare semantics of Tocharian B āñme (wish, desire; self, inner being, soul).[2] Possibly related to the personal name Illyrian *Andis.
