[edit]From Proto-Iranian *HaHtr̥paHtah, from *HáHtr̥š (“Fire; fire”) + *paHtáh (“protected”), from Proto-Iranian *paHtáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *paHtás, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂-tó-s, from *peh₂- (“to protect”) + *-tós. Equivalent to *ātr̥š (“fire”) + 𐎱𐎠𐎫 (p-a-t /pātaʰ/, “protected”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬙𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬞𐬁𐬙𐬀 (Atərᵊ.pāta).[1][2]
