From *r̥tah ("Asha; truth") from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hr̥tás (“truth”) (whence Avestan 𐬀𐬴𐬀 (aṣ̌a, “truth”)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂r̥-tós, from *h₂er- (“to fit; fix; put together”) + *sūrah ("strong"),^[1]^[2] from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćuHrás (“strong”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱewh₁- (“to be strong, to swell”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬏𐬭𐬀 (sūra), Middle Persian swl (sūr), Ancient Greek κύριος (kúrios).
