Etymology

[edit]

From now-archaic Italian rabbatto (French, Old French rabat) in the mid-17th century, deverbal from Italian rabbattere (French rabattre, Old French rabatre). These verbs suggest a Late Latin *re-abbattere. Compare Late Latin abbattere, abattere (6th century), whose base is Late Latin battere, from Latin battuere.[1] Cognate with English rebate.
