[edit]From Middle High German platte, blatte, plate, from late Old High German platta, from Vulgar Latin *platta, *plattus, from Ancient Greek πλατύς (platús, “wide; flat”). Cognate with German Platte and Cimbrian platta; also cognate with English plate and Dutch plaat which come from the same Latin source, but were borrowed via Old French.
