Etymology 1
[edit]From a Bahnaric language. The first syllable originated from the word "mountain" (cf. Halang ngŏk, Sedang ngo).
The current pronunciation is due to Sino-Vietnamization, compare Vọng Các (“Bangkok”), Nam Vang (“Phnom Penh”).
