[edit]From Middle High German nahtwahte, from Old High German nahtwahta, from Proto-West Germanic *nahtwahtu. Equivalent to Nacht + Wache. Cognate with Dutch nachtwacht and West Frisian nachtwacht. Also related to Dutch nachtwake, Old English nihtwacu, and English nightwatch.
