From Middle High German nahtwahter, from Old High German nahtwahtāri, from Proto-West Germanic *nahtawahtāri. Equivalent to Nacht (night) +‎ Wächter (guardian). Cognate with Dutch nachtwachter and West Frisian nachtwachter.
