Etymology

From Middle High German nahtwache, from Old High German nahtwahha, from Proto-West Germanic *nahtwaku. Equivalent to Nacht +‎ Wache. Cognate with Dutch nachtwake and Old English nihtwacu. Also related to Dutch nachtwacht and West Frisian nachtwacht (compare Nachtwacht), and English nightwatch.
