Usage notes

Mieter usually refers to tenants of a residential property or smaller commercial property. Tenants of a piece of land (e.g., farmland, but also the land a residential property is built on), whole commercial buildings, petrol stations, and restaurants, taverns, inns, canteens, etc., are usually referred to as Pächter.
