Usage notes
[edit]Despite the above official forms, it is considerably more common in Hungarian without the Arabic article (ال (al-)).[6] Several other toponyms (even if they have articles in the original) are given in the orthography dictionary without it, such as Bahrein, Baszra, Kairó, Kartúm, and Kuvait (notwithstanding the forms el-Gíza (“Giza”) and el-Gurdaka (“Hurghada”)).[4] In addition, the manual of style in the Hungarian-language Wikipedia requires the Arabic article to be omitted at the beginning of single-element proper nouns.[7]
