Shortened form of Serbo-Croatian Косово поље (Kosovo polje, blackbirds’ field), from косова (kosova), possessive form of кос (kos, blackbird), and поље (polje, field), and made into a feminine 4th-declension noun in Latvian, probably following the Albanian form Kosova.
