Türkiye
English
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unadapted borrowing from Turkish Türkiye. First adopted in 2020 by the Turkish Exporters Assembly and then by the Turkish government in December 2021 to replace the exonyms of Turkey in other languages. In English, the change has been attributed to confusion with the noun senses of the homonym turkey.[1] In June 2022, the United Nations accepted the country's request to change its official name there.[2]
Pronunciation
[edit]Proper noun
[edit]Türkiye
- (neologism, official, uncommon) A country located in eastern Thrace in southeastern Europe and Anatolia in southwestern Asia. Official name: Republic of Türkiye. Capital: Ankara
- 2020 March, “March 18th to be commemorated together with Anzac descendants”, in The Turkish Perspective[4], number 80, Turkish Exporters Assembly, page 7:

- 2022 January 1, “'Modular, prefabricated construction sector to thrive in 2022'”, in Anadolu Agency[7], archived from the original on 26 May 2022:
- Dorce is one of the leading companies in emergency settlement field globally, he said, adding that the firm is trying to meet all the vital needs of more than 100,000 people in the modular prefabricated integrated living spaces in different regions of Turkiye.
Usage notes
[edit]- Prior to 2022, the term was rare outside of Turkish sources or official contexts, such as when referring to the country by its full official name (Republic of Türkiye). However, general use has sharply increased since its recognition by the United Nations in that year.
- Türkiye (with a diaeresis) is the dominant and officially prescribed form, but it is sometimes omitted, as in Turkiye.
- The officially prescribed all caps form is TÜRKİYE, with a dotted capital İ.
