[edit]First attested as gherwerdingen in 1379-1380. Derived from Old Dutch Gerwerd (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing-. The toponym has no etymological links to Old English gearwe (“yarrow”) or any of that word's descendants.
